Introduction of the Department of Registration of Political Parties and Social Organizations

The Department of Registration of Political Parties and Social Organizations was established within the Ministry of Justice pursuant to decree number 152 dated October 27, 2002, to  review and register Social Organizations and Political Parties.

The main duties and responsibilities include:

Authority to issue a license for Social Organizations is according to the Law of Social Organizations and based on draft number (44/12) dated September 16, 2002 of Council of Ministers, which was signed by the President of Interim Islamic Government on October 27, 2002.  The official gazette number (804) published the law on January 12, 2003, assigning Ministry of Justice responsibility to review, register, and issue a license for Social Organizations.

The Ministry of Justice is responsible to review, register, and issue a license for Political Parties.  Authority is according to the Law of Political Parties and Regulation on Registration of Political Parties signed by the President of Interim Islamic Government, based on draft number 23 dated September 7, 2004, of Council of Ministers and decree number (73) dated October 14, 2003, and published in the official gazette number (812) on October 17, 2004.Ministry of Justice delegated the duty to Department of Registration of Political Parties and Social Organizations who is responsible to issue the necessary license to Political Parties and Social Organizations.

Since the formation of Department of Registration of Political Parties and Social Organizations on September 18, 2013, the total number of licensed Political Parties is (57) and Social Organizations is (3770) in Afghanistan as of December 31, 2016.
