ABOUT THE MINISTER
Mr. Kenneth Roth, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch and his accompanying delegation visited H.E. Saranpoh Habibullah Ghanlib, Minister of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in his office on Tuesday dated 08/01/1391.
The issue of this meeting included exchanging views on situation of human rights, women and girls in Afghanistan and women’s imprisonment as a result of the moral crimes and assistance of Human Rights Watch for the betterment of human rights in Afghanistan.
Human Rights Watch is going to release a report on those women and girls imprisoned as a result of the moral crimes and run away from home in Afghanistan.
Responding a question regarding the imprisonment of women in reaction to their run away from home, while it is not considered a crime based on the Afghanistan’s law and that the running away from home may happen as a result of the violence used against women, H.E Minister of Justice added that; there are many reasons behind run away of women from their homes and contain many types, but all are not punished, rather a particular situation relating to crimes and moral wrongdoings are imprisoned. The files which I have evaluated in 17 provinces were related to persons imprisoned under the title of run away from home while the main crime of them was kidnap or moral wrongdoings indeed. In such cases the girl herself paves ground for running away with a person who has no family relation or legal intimation with her and then commits moral wrongdoing. Unfortunately such people are imprisoned with the accusation of running away from home.
